Put FTO on your EIC Accelerator checklist

Applying for the EIC Accelerator (Deadline: 1 October 2025)? Don’t overlook one of the most underestimated annexes: the Freedom to Operate (FTO) analysis!

Evaluators expect you to show that your innovation can be commercialised in Europe without infringing on third-party IP. That’s why the guidelines explicitly require you to include an FTO analysis or at least a short explanation if it’s not applicable.

A strong FTO covers the basics: a patent landscape search, a clear methodology, a risk assessment with mitigation measures, and its role in your wider IP and commercialisation strategy. Even if your solution is software-based, a 2-page justification is still expected.

Bottom line: FTO = credibility, risk management, and stronger prospects for funding. It’s all about showing you’re investment ready.

If you’re preparing your proposal for the EIC Accelerator, now is the moment to get your FTO in place. Do you already have your FTO drafted, or are you looking for expert help to make it robust? Feel free to get in touch!
