PEF, a plant based alternative to PET

    • Patents

PEF. A fully plant-based alternative to fossil-based PET. If you’re working on sustainable materials, this is one to watch.

Same look, better performance. It keeps juice fresh for longer, is lighter than glass, and has a smaller footprint than traditional plastics. The feedstock is industrial sugars, now made from wheat. True scale will come from what we usually throw away. Avantium is working on producing it from agricultural residues and textile waste.

PEF is fully recyclable and fits into existing PET recycling streams. That makes it easier to scale and harder to ignore.

Sometimes it’s enough to make something familiar, just better. Cleaner inputs, longer shelf life, smaller footprint. And built in a way that others can pick up and scale.
