The most interesting job you never considered

    • Patents

Patent Attorney, it might just be the most interesting job you never considered.
Recently, I gave an alumni lecture with that exact topic. Not because everyone should become one, but because more people could.

It’s a role for people who like puzzles, who enjoy telling a story and shaping strategy. You work independently, but you’re never alone. You translate science into value. You protect what matters.

One moment you’re diving deep into new research, the next you’re helping companies to successfully bring a product to market.

Most students focus on textbooks and academic papers, and rightly so. In the world beyond the lab, patents are a powerful source of knowledge and value. An innovative company’s true worth? It’s often tied up in intangible assets, especially IP.

No matter where your career takes you, IP will cross your path sooner or later. Understanding IP gives you more than just knowledge alone, it gives you options.

So even if you don’t consider becoming a patent attorney, make sure you understand what IP is, how it works, and why it matters. It’s not just paperwork. It’s what turns ideas into impact.
