Jan Willem completed his studies in Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft in 2008. His specific areas of expertise are in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, consumer products, packaging, horticulture and offshore technology.
In 2009, Jan Willem came into contact with a patent attorney who then told him extensively about the profession. Afterwards, Jan Willem was so enthusiastic that he immediately started training as a patent attorney and thus entered the profession.
After more than 13 years working with another patent office, he moved to AOMB in October 2023, where he now works as a European patent attorney.
What makes the subject so fascinating to him is that the work often seems like a big puzzle. It starts when an inventor reports on an invention. In the steps that follow during the award procedure, that puzzle is simply going on. If you want to adjust the claims, you have to do it with what was originally put on paper when the patent application was drawn up. It can then often be a whole puzzle to take just enough distance from the state of the technology without giving up too much protection scope immediately. Jan Willem finds a very nice challenge!
Due to his practical experience and background as an industrial designer, he can think well with the customer. Thanks to this, he is also able to quickly see how it can be “otherwise”.
In his free time, Jan Willem likes to be with his family. In addition, he likes to go cycling or attend beer festivals with friends.
