Green steel is no longer a concept

Green steel isn’t a theory. It’s being produced right now. From Sweden to Brazil, two technologies are changing the game. And they’re doing it in different ways, with patents and smart IP strategies.

At SSAB, hydrogen is replacing coal in a process that starts with sponge iron and ends in electric arc furnaces. In Sweden and Finland, they’re building a fossil-free value chain from the mine up. They are already running pilots and are already shipping fossil-free steel to first movers in construction and automotive.

At Boston Metal, the route is electrochemical. Their Molten Oxide Electrolysis technology splits iron ore with electricity alone. No blast furnace, no hydrogen, no water. Just pure molten iron and oxygen as byproduct. Their pilot and demonstration plants are already operating in Brazil.

Both approaches work. Both are operating. And both are backed by serious IP strategies. Not just to protect technology, but to enable licensing, scaling, and long-term market access.

If you're working on something that reshapes materials or skips legacy steps, let's talk. I help cleantech innovators turn smart process design into patent strategies that make growth possible.
